The hotel is called the Seaman's and International House, and it's on Irving Place near Union Square. across the street is The New York Sports Club, down the block is Starbucks, and there are hundreds of little restaurants in the area. I stay at this hotel because it is like an ashram. It is modest and cheap. If you are willing to share a bath, it can be even cheaper. No wifi, in fact no soap. But it's fine with me. The proceeds go to the Lutheran Church Seaman's Mission, and old seamen stay there as well as young international travelers. I like the idea of a non- profit hotel, I like the friendly Lutherans who work there, and I love the location. It was my secret, but now I have shared it with you.
